King County is where Washington's heat pump conversion wave is most concentrated. The mild marine climate suits them, summers now justify cooling, and the main constraint is usually electrical panel capacity in older Seattle homes.

More heat pump conversions happen in King County than anywhere else in Washington, and the reasons are stacked. The marine climate means a heat pump almost never drops out of its efficient operating range. Summers have become hot enough often enough that cooling is now a planned purchase rather than an emergency one. And the county's household incomes support the upfront cost.

The constraint is electrical. Seattle's older neighbourhoods carry a large stock of pre-war and mid-century homes with service panels that were adequate for a gas furnace and not much else. Adding a heat pump — often alongside an EV charger and sometimes an induction range — frequently means a panel upgrade first. A contractor who does not check panel capacity on the first visit is setting up a change order.
