Panel upgrades have become one of the most common electrical projects in Washington, and almost nobody sets out to do one. They surface while pricing a heat pump, an EV charger or a kitchen remodel.
Why demand has risen
Houses built for gas heating, gas cooking and one car are now being asked to run heat pumps, induction ranges and EV chargers. Older service panels were adequate for the original brief and are not for the new one.
King County sees this most acutely, because it combines the state’s oldest urban housing with its highest EV adoption and heaviest heat pump conversion activity.
Size of the increase
Moving to a larger service capacity involves more than swapping a box. Depending on the increase, it can involve the service entrance conductors, the meter base and the connection from the utility.
The practical implication is that a modest increase and a substantial one are different jobs, not different sizes of the same job.
Location and condition
Where the panel sits affects the work considerably. An accessible panel on an exterior wall near the service entrance is straightforward. One in a finished basement, a converted space, or somewhere the service run has to be extended is not.
Older installations sometimes need the panel relocated to satisfy current requirements around clearance and access, which adds work.
What gets found
Opening up an older Washington electrical system produces findings. Knob-and-tube remnants, ungrounded circuits, aluminium branch wiring, connections that were never right.
Not all of it must be addressed to complete a panel upgrade, but some of it will be, and an electrician who raises it is doing their job rather than expanding scope. Ask during quoting what they expect to find given the age of the house.
Permit and inspection
Panel upgrades require both, and in Washington electrical permitting generally runs through the state’s electrical programme rather than your city building department. Ask whether the permit is included in the quoted price.
Utility coordination
A service upgrade needs the utility involved, and their scheduling is outside your electrician’s control. This affects timeline more than cost, and it is the most common reason a panel upgrade takes longer than the work itself would suggest.
Build it into your project schedule. If a heat pump installation depends on the panel, the utility’s calendar becomes your critical path.
Doing it once
The most useful cost advice here is planning. If a heat pump, an EV charger and an induction range are anywhere in your plans over the next few years, have the panel assessed for all of them now.
Sizing the upgrade once is dramatically cheaper than discovering in three years that the capacity you just installed is already spoken for.
