A gutter system has one job: collect water off a large roof surface and take it somewhere harmless. When it fails, water goes against the foundation instead, and it does so during exactly the months when the ground is least able to absorb it.
Why it matters more in Washington
Volume and duration. Western Washington rainfall is persistent rather than dramatic, which means a compromised gutter system fails continuously for months rather than during occasional events.
Thurston County deserves specific mention — Olympia receives more annual rainfall than Seattle, on flatter ground with slower-draining soils. Gutter capacity that copes elsewhere can be marginal there.
The other Washington factor is conifers. Needles are small enough to pass leaf guards and abundant enough to fill a gutter steadily, and they drop year-round rather than in one autumn burst.
What clogged gutters actually cause
Water overflowing at the fascia, rotting the board and sometimes the rafter tails behind it. Water running down the wall, testing siding and window flashing continuously. Water pooling at the foundation, which finds its way into crawl spaces and basements.
The crawl space consequence is the most common in Washington and the least noticed, because it presents upstairs as musty smells and cold floors rather than as anything obviously related to a gutter.
How often
Under heavy conifer canopy, twice through autumn is realistic rather than excessive. On an open lot with little overhanging vegetation, once before the wet season may be enough.
The honest test is to look. If you can see debris from the ground, or if water sheets over the edge during rain rather than running to the downspouts, it needs clearing regardless of when you last did it.
Where the water should go
This is the part homeowners most often overlook. Clearing gutters achieves little if the downspout deposits everything at the base of the wall.
Water should discharge well away from the foundation — extensions, splash blocks or a proper drainage run. Watch during heavy rain and see where it actually goes, because the design intent and the reality frequently differ after years of settling.
In Thurston County and other high-rainfall, flat-ground areas, this is not a detail. Standing water against a foundation is the mechanism by which crawl space problems begin.
Checking the system itself
Look for sagging sections, which indicate failed hangers and produce standing water in the gutter. Check joints for leaks. Confirm the fall runs toward the downspouts rather than away.
Look at the fascia board behind the gutter for softness or staining, which indicates water has been overflowing for some time.
Guards, honestly
Gutter guards reduce maintenance rather than eliminating it, and their performance against conifer needles is considerably worse than against broad leaves. Needles are small, and many guard designs pass them straight through or trap them on top.
They can be worth it on a difficult roof or where access is genuinely hazardous. Treat claims of never cleaning again with scepticism, particularly under Washington conifers.
Safety
Falls from ladders cause serious injuries every year. If the roof is steep, high, or the ground uneven, paying someone is a reasonable decision rather than an admission of anything.
