EV adoption in Washington is high, particularly around Puget Sound, and home charging is where most drivers want to solve the problem. What determines the cost is almost entirely what already exists in the house.
Panel capacity comes first
A charger draws substantial current on a dedicated circuit. Whether your existing service can support that depends on its total capacity and what is already connected.
In older Washington homes this is frequently the constraint. Panels sized for an era of gas heating and gas cooking were not designed for a car charging overnight, and King County’s older housing stock hits this limit regularly.
Have an electrician assess before you buy anything. The assessment answers whether you need a service upgrade, which is a separate job with its own permit, inspection and utility coordination.
Assess for everything at once

If a heat pump, an induction range or a second charger is anywhere in your plans over the next few years, have the panel assessed for all of it now. Sizing an upgrade once is dramatically cheaper than discovering in three years that the capacity you just installed is already committed.
This is a common and expensive sequencing mistake in Washington, precisely because heat pump conversion and EV adoption are both happening at once.
Distance and routing
The second cost driver. A charger on a wall adjacent to the panel is straightforward. One at a detached garage across a driveway means a long run and frequently trenching.
This is why quotes vary so much between houses that appear similar. Pierce, Kitsap and rural Washington properties with detached garages and larger lots see this more than dense King County neighbourhoods.
Mention your parking arrangement and the panel location when you first make contact, because those two facts determine most of the quote.
Hardwired or plug-in
Both are common. A plug-in unit on a suitable outlet can be removed and taken with you; a hardwired unit is permanently installed and may be required for higher power levels.
Either way the circuit itself is permitted, inspected work. The difference is at the termination rather than in the underlying installation.
Permits
EV charger circuits require a permit and inspection. In Washington, electrical permitting generally runs through the state’s electrical programme rather than your city building department, which surprises homeowners expecting one office.
Your electrician should handle it. A contractor suggesting the permit is unnecessary is proposing to remove the only independent check on work you cannot evaluate — and unpermitted electrical work surfaces at sale.
Load management as an alternative
Worth asking about. Where panel capacity is marginal, load management devices can allow a charger to operate within existing capacity by reducing or pausing charging when other loads are high.
It is not right for every situation and it does not replace a genuinely needed upgrade, but in some homes it avoids one. An electrician who works with EV installations regularly will know whether it applies.
Outdoor and detached installations
Washington’s climate matters for equipment specification. Units mounted outdoors need appropriate weather rating, and in coastal areas — Kitsap, coastal Pierce, the Skagit islands — salt air affects outdoor electrical equipment and enclosures faster than inland.
Detached garages may also have aging supply of uncertain vintage, which is worth assessing rather than assuming it will carry a new load.
Incentives
Utility programmes supporting home charging installation have existed in Washington and change over time. An electrician active in this space will know what is currently open in your utility district. Ask before committing, since it can affect the net cost.
